Why Go with Crystal Seas?

The local experience

You’re not just another tourist when you travel with Crystal Seas. You get to experience island life through the eyes of a local, we are passionate about sharing these beautiful islands with you and letting you in on all our local secrets. You’ll eat in local restaurants, stay in accommodations that are locally owned, and learn to love these islands as much as we do.

Small personal groups

A great trip involves many factors. One of these is the group size. A smaller group is safer, allows for more interactions between the guides and guest, and gives our guests a chance to know each other. Furthermore, we can also adjust and modify the trip to the individual desires and interests of the group, allowing our guests to participate in various activities ranging from birding to advanced kayaking to photography.

Tailored to your skill level

We begin each of our tours with a thorough safety/kayak/bicycle lesson to familiarize you with your equipment so that you are adequately prepared for your adventure. This lesson includes paddling technique, sea kayaking safety, biking techniques, biking safety, becoming familiar with our safety gear and other helpful and necessary preparation for our expedition.

We provide you with drinks and lunch..

We provide lunch every day of your trip, starting on the first day and ending with your last. We also provide plenty of snacks. You will be impressed by the heartiness of our well prepared lunches and then you will be able to enjoy dinner in Friday Harbor on your own. (Dinner is not included). We can accommodate your dietary needs, just ask us.

Sample Trip Itinerary

(subject to change due to factors such as lodging availability, restaurant availability and ferry schedules)

Day 1 - Circumnavigate Henry Island

Today's activity departs from the west side of San Juan Island. Here we kayak north to start our circumnavigation of Henry Island. We follow the outer coastline which is orca whale territory. Along the way we will see a huge bald eagles nest, harbor seals lounging on the rocks and cormorants nesting in the cliffs. This afternoon we will take a break for lunch on Posey Island or one of the other remote beaches. We paddle back through Mosquito Pass; a sheltered waterway for kayakers, and then on into Mitchell Bay.

Day 2 - Kayak West Side of San Juan Island or Whale Watch Cruise

Choose your own adventure today!  We will either shuttle you to the beautiful western side of San Juan Island for a day of sea kayaking or you may choose to go on a whale watch wildlife cruise aboard the Odyssey. The day of kayaking includes a kayak safety lesson before you begin paddling along the evergreen cloaked coastline. As we journey down the coast, we'll keep a lookout for marine mammals surfacing above the water as we are in orca whale territory.

About halfway through the trip, we stop for lunch along a beach where you can search for creatures in the tide pools, look for sea glass among the pebbles or simply soak in the scenery. After lunch we will head back out on the water in search of orcas and eagles. If you choose the whale watch boat, you will spend the afternoon cruising the San Juan Islands aboard a comfortable classic motor yacht. You can sit back and relax in comfort while the personable on-board naturalists share their depth of knowledge of the local whales and wildlife. Afterwards, your guide will shuttle you back to your accommodations.

Day 3 - Kayak the north shore of Orcas Island

This morning we will launch from North Beach and paddle along the northern shoreline of Orcas. If the weather is right, we can paddle north to Sucia Island; a state marine park known for its emerald waters and sandstone formations. Otherwise, we will kayak to Point Doughty, a 57 acre preserve.  Along the way, you might see bald eagles perched in old Douglas fir trees or a great blue heron wading in a shallow bay searching for its lunch.  Afterwards, we will take you to your comfortable room at one of Orcas Island's top inns. This evening we will enjoy dinner with a view at one of the best restaurants on Orcas Island.

Day 4 - Kayak the Wasp Islands

This route is simply breathtaking. It winds along a group of very small islands called the Wasp Islands. As we paddle along the shoreline, you might see bald eagles perched in old Douglas fir trees or witness a great blue heron wading in a shallow bay searching for its lunch. This is harbor porpoise territory so stay on the lookout for marine mammals! Your guides will make you an amazing picnic lunch along the way.
