Why Go with Crystal Seas?

The local experience

A family adventure with Crystal Seas is so much more than sightseeing. Together, you'll explore the San Juan Islands the way locals do — discovering hidden coves, spotting wildlife, and uncovering the little secrets that make this place so special. You'll dine at family-owned restaurants, rest your heads at charming locally-run inns, and come home with the kind of memories that last a lifetime.

Top Notch Accommodations

Top Notch Accommodations

Each night of your adventure, you'll settle into a handpicked island inn — Tucker House the Friday Harbor Grand on San Juan Island, and the Kingfish or the Inn at Ship Bay on Orcas Island. These aren't just places to sleep; they're welcoming, character-filled retreats where your family can recharge after a day on the water. Wake up each morning to a fresh, hearty breakfast made by your innkeepers using ingredients from nearby farms. It's the perfect way to fuel up for another day of exploring.

Best Islands Restaurants

Dinner is a highlight every night. We've chosen the best restaurants the San Juan Islands have to offer — and everyone in the family gets to order whatever they like from the full menu. Whether your crew has adventurous appetites or favorite comfort foods, there's something for everyone. It's a stress-free, delicious end to every day on the water.**

**Alcoholic beverages are not included with dinner.

Small personal groups

Small personal groups

We keep our groups small — no more than 8 guests — so every family member gets real attention from our guides, not just a number in a crowd. Smaller groups also mean a safer, more relaxed experience on the water, with more flexibility to follow your family's interests. Spot eagles and herons, linger at a beach your kids love, try some advanced paddling techniques, or pause for photos of that perfect sunset. The trip shapes itself around you.

Want the whole experience just for your family? Private and custom tours are available upon request.

Professional guides

Your guides are the heart of this adventure. We hand-pick every guide for their warmth, expertise, and genuine love of the islands — and for how good they are with people of all ages. Whether they're teaching your kids to paddle, pointing out a bald eagle overhead, or making sure everyone feels safe and confident on the water, our guides have a way of turning a great trip into an unforgettable one.

Gourmet meals

Gourmet meals

From your first lunch to your last, nearly every meal is covered and taken care of*. Before your trip, we'll send a simple questionnaire to learn about your family's food preferences and any dietary needs — picky eaters, allergies, and everything in between are all welcome here. We source fresh, seasonal ingredients from island farms and local producers, so the food is as good as the scenery. Expect beautiful breakfasts at your inn, satisfying trail lunches that hit the spot after a morning of paddling, and memorable dinners at our favorite island restaurants.

*On 4, 5, and 6 day tours, one evening is left free for families to explore town on their own. Dinner that night is not included.

Tailored to your skill level

No experience? No problem. Every tour kicks off with a fun, hands-on lesson designed for all ages and ability levels. Your guides will walk your whole family through the basics — how to paddle comfortably, what to do on the water, and how all the gear works — so everyone feels confident and ready before you head out. By the time you launch, even the youngest paddlers will feel right at home in their kayak.

Sample Trip Itinerary

(subject to change due to factors such as lodging availability, restaurant availability and ferry schedules)

Day 1 - Kayak east side of San Juan Island

From Jackson's Beach we will begin paddling the calm and sheltered shoreline of Griffin Bay.  We kayak past driftwood covered beaches and rocky coasts in search of seals, bald eagles, and other marine species.

Enjoy views of neighboring Lopez Island, Mount Baker, the Cascade Mountains, Fourth of July Beach, and Jakle's Lagoon.  We take a break for a delicious picnic lunch prepared by your guides on Turn Island as we navigate around it.

Day 2 - Kayak the West Side

Paddle along the evergreen cloaked coastline of San Juan Island's west side. As we journey down the coast, we'll keep a lookout for marine mammals surfacing above the water as we are in orca whale territory.

About halfway through the trip, we stop for lunch along a beach where you can search for creatures in the tide pools, look for sea glass among the pebbles or simply soak in the scenery. After lunch we will head back out on the water in search of orcas and eagles.

Day 3 - Kayak Henry Island or Whale Watch

Today you have the option of sea kayaking around Henry Island or going whale watching. If the sea kayaking option is selected you will circumnavigate Henry Island (about 7-9 miles) and enjoy a guide prepared picnic lunch. If the whale watching and wildlife cruise option is selected you will board the classic and impeccably maintained 65' motor-yacht "Odyssey" with San Juan Excursions. This whale and wildlife cruise lasts about 3-4 hours. Picnic lunch will be served on board.
