Why Go with Crystal Seas?

Our excellent knowledgeable and friendly nature/multi-sport guides.

We strongly believe that an outstanding guide can make the difference between a good trip and a fabulous trip, therefore we place a lot of emphasis on using the best guides available. We pride ourselves on our choice of guides. We choose guides who are people persons, friendly, knowledgeable, have a great attitude, are excellent leaders, great teachers and who love what they do.

TIMES AND DISTANCES

We paddle an average of 8-10 miles during each day which amounts to about 4 to 5 hours on the water. We shuttle you from Friday Harbor at 10 AM on the first day of your trip to our launch site and finish no later than 4:00 PM on your last day. We are glad to accommodate any needs which require variation from our normal schedule including any dietary needs or alterations in return times.

We bicycle an average of 15-25 miles each day with help from a support van to give you a lift if you need one. Our routes run along the low-traffic country roads, allowing time to stop and check out the amazing views or visit a local art studio along the way.

GOURMET MEALS

Starting with lunch on the first day and ending with lunch on your last day we provide all meals in between. We feel that what you eat can be a major factor in the quality of your expedition and therefore we pride ourselves on the quality and heartiness of our well prepared meals. Prior to your trip we send out food questionnaires and customize all of our meals to the various dietary requirements of our guests.

At least two guides on all of our multi-day kayaking & bicycling expeditions groups of 6 or more

One of our guides will make your trip with us great, but two will make it even better. We have at least two guides on all of our multi-day expeditions groups of 6 or more. This makes our trips safer, more intimate and allows our guides to offer our guests more, such as an evening paddle or hike, additional paddling skill development and more local folklore.

SMALL PERSONAL GROUPS

A great trip involves many factors. One of these is the group size. A smaller group is safer on and off the water, allows for more interactions between the guides and guest and gives our guests a chance to know each other. Furthermore, we can also adjust and modify the trip to the individual desires and interests of the group, allowing our guests to participate in various activities ranging from birding to advanced kayaking to custom bicycle routes for more mileage to photography. For all these reasons and more we keep our regularly scheduled multi-day expedition group size to 8 guests or less ( unless a private trip ).

Private and custom tours are available upon request.

NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED*

We begin each of our tours with a thorough safety/kayak lesson to familiarize you with your equipment so that you are adequately prepared for your adventure. This lesson includes paddling technique, sea kayaking safety, loading and unloading of your sea kayak, becoming familiar with our safety gear and other helpful and necessary preparation for our expedition. *Previous knowledge of bicycling is a must.

Camping at it's finest

We know that after a day of bicycling you are ready to take a warm shower. Because of this, we stay at handpicked campsites whether it's lakeside at Moran State Park on Orcas or Lakedale on San Juan Island. Our sites give you that "camping in the great outdoors" experience that you are looking for.

Sample Trip Itinerary

(subject to change due to factors such as lodging availability, restaurant availability and ferry schedules)

Day 1 - Bicycle the San Juan Island Loop

Today we cycle along quiet country roads with our first stop being at an organic Lavender Farm. Here you can explore the beautiful purple hillside and take the perfect family photo. Don't forget to taste the variety of foods and products created with lavender before you head out. From here we cycle on to Lime Kiln State Park where you can hike along the rocky paths to a lighthouse, explore the tide pools, and watch for whales while your guide prepares lunch. Afterwards, we cycle north visiting the largest Alpaca Farm on San Juan Island. We then cycle on to Roche Harbor for an afternoon ice cream and to walk the docks of its beautiful marina. Roche Harbor is a quaint village with artist kiosks to check out, English gardens to explore, a sculpture park to walk through, and a very unique mausoleum for the adventurous. At any point along to route, the support van is available to give any family member a ride. At this point we can all jump into the van and head to Friday Harbor or continue to explore the scenic roads of White Point. This route will take you past Westcott Bay along a narrow country road to the shores of Westcott Bay Shellfish Co where you can sample island oysters and have a cold beverage. Next we will cycle back into Friday harbor for a relaxing evening.

Day 2 - Circumnavigate Henry Island

Today's activity departs from the west side of San Juan Island, we will kayak north toward Henry Island in search of wildlife. We follow the outer coastline which is orca whale territory. Along the way we will see a huge bald eagles nest, harbor seals lounging on the rocks and cormorants nesting in the cliffs. This afternoon we will take a break for lunch on Posey Island or one of the other remote pocket beaches. We paddle back through Mosquito Pass; a sheltered waterway for kayakers, and then on into Mitchell Bay. If time allows we can head into Westcott Bay and take a look at the Westcott Bay Shellfish farm from the water.

Day 3 - Kayak West Side of San Juan Island or Whale Watch Cruise

Choose your own adventure today! We will either shuttle you to the beautiful western side of San Juan Island for a day of sea kayaking or you may choose to go on a whale watch wildlife cruise aboard the Odyssey. The day of kayaking includes a kayak safety lesson before you begin paddling, making sure everyone in comfortable and ready for your adventure. As we journey down the coast, we'll keep a lookout for marine mammals surfacing above the water as we are in orca whale territory. Today's route has a few different beach options for lunch, allowing us to accommodate everyone in the group. About halfway through the trip, we stop for lunch along a beach where you can search for creatures in the tide pools, look for sea glass among the pebbles or simply soak in the scenery. After lunch we will head back out on the water in search of orcas and eagles.

If you choose the whale watch boat, you will spend the afternoon cruising the San Juan Islands aboard a comfortable classic motor yacht. You can sit back and relax in comfort while the personable on-board naturalists share their depth of knowledge of the local whales and wildlife. This is a great option for everyone, endless sights to see and the naturalist love entertaining you with their stories.

Day 4 - Cycle Orcas Island Loop

Today's ride starts in Deer Harbor, a small marina with views of the Wasp Islands. On Orcas Island we will cycle along the shore of West Sound to the wildflower lined country roads of Crow Valley which sits at the base of Turtleback Mountain. Along the way we’ll check out Orcas Island Pottery where you can find beautiful and unique pottery handcrafted by local artists. We will refuel on snacks while enjoying the views over Presidents Channel. Either jump in the van or ride over Enchanted Forest Road into Eastsound. Your guide will prepare a picnic lunch while you explore Eastsound (a small village on Orcas Island). From here we cycle into an old growth forest to Moran State Park. Here we have options. You can swim in crisp mountain lakes, cycle the 5.5 mile climb to the summit of Mount Constitution, walk to beautiful Cascade Falls or call it a day and climb in the van for a ride to the top. This area offers spectacular views of Mount Baker to the east and the San Juan Archipelago in all directions.

Day 5 - Kayak the north shore of Orcas Island

This morning we will launch from North Beach and paddle along the northern shoreline of Orcas. If the weather is right, we can paddle north to Sucia Island; a marine state park known for its emerald waters and sandstone formations. If you're seeking a shorter day on the water, we will kayak to Point Doughty, a 57 acre preserve.  Along the way, you might see bald eagles perched in old douglas fir trees or a great blue heron wading in a shallow bay searching for its lunch.  Afterwards, we will explore other parts of beautiful Orcas Island being returning to your comfortable room at one of Orcas Island's top inns.

Day 6 - Cycle Lopez Island

We start cycling at the Odlin County Park, enjoying views of the majestic Olympic Mountains. You can stop in the Lopez Village for a morning coffee and freshly baked pastry from the amazing Holly B's Bakery. Cycle along the shore of Fisherman Bay and head out to Otis Perkins County Park to enjoy the scenery.

Continue the quiet country roads toward Shark Reef County Park for a scenic walk and picnic lunch. A short walking trail brings you through a beautiful forest and pops you out on the rocky southwest shore looking over turbulent Cattle Pass toward San Juan Island and the Olympic Mountains. You may spot several harbor seals on Shark Reef. Continue along the route to Agate beach to enjoy the views of the Iceberg Islands. Explore this beautiful beach loaded with perfect skipping rocks. We will enjoy our last lunch together and ff time allows, make the walk to Iceberg Point, it is one of the most beautiful places on Lopez Island.

This it the last stop of your trip before we head back to the Lopez Island ferry landing.
