Small personal groups

A great trip involves many factors. One of these is the group size. A smaller group is safer, allows for more interactions between the guides and guest and gives our guests a chance to know each other. Furthermore, we can also adjust and modify the trip to the individual desires and interests of the group, allowing our guests to participate in various activities ranging from birding, to advanced kayaking, to photography opportunities. For all these reasons and more we keep our regularly scheduled multi-day expedition group size to 8 guests or less ( unless a private trip ).

Private and custom tours are available upon request.

Best Island restaurants

Our all inclusive trip involves eating at the most desired restaurants in the San Juan Islands. On all of our trips our guests are allowed to choose from the full menu and select anything and everything they want**. We select all the top quality restaurants, giving you the best dining experience the San Juan Islands have to offer.

We feel that what you eat can be a major factor in the quality of your expedition and therefore we pride ourselves on the quality and heartiness of our well prepared meals. Prior to your trip we send out food questionnaires and customize all of our meals to the various dietary requirements of your family.

*Our 4, 5 and 6 day tours allow one night for you and your family to explore town on your own. This evening's dinner is not included in the cost of the trip.

**We do not cover the cost of alcoholic beverages with dinner.

Professional guides

We strongly believe that an outstanding professional guide can make the difference between a good trip and a fabulous trip, therefore we place a lot of emphasis on providing the best guides available. We choose guides who are family friendly, knowledgeable, have a great attitude, are excellent leaders, great teachers and who love what they do. We provide two guides on all of our bicycling expeditions groups of 6 or more.

Family Friendly TIMES AND DISTANCES

In an average day of your kayak trip we will paddle 8-10 miles, amounting to approximately 4 to 5 hours of time on the water. The day is split up with a few stops for eating, stretching and necessary restroom breaks on various public-landing spots throughout the San Juan Islands.

Tailored to your skill level

We begin each of our tours with a thorough safety and kayak lesson to familiarize you with your equipment so that you are adequately prepared for your adventure. This lesson includes paddling technique, sea kayaking safety, becoming familiar with our safety gear and other helpful and necessary preparation for our expedition.

Sample Trip Itinerary

(subject to change due to factors such as lodging availability, restaurant availability and ferry schedules)

Day 1 - Kayak east side of San Juan Island

From Jackson's Beach we will begin paddling the calm and sheltered shoreline of Griffin Bay. This beautiful bay offers a variety of paddling options. We kayak past driftwood covered beaches and rocky coasts in search of seals, bald eagles, and other marine species. Enjoy views of neighboring Lopez Island, Mount Baker, the Cascade Mountains, Fourth of July Beach, and Jakle's Lagoon.  We take a break for a delicious picnic lunch prepared by your guides on Turn Island as you explore the shorelines.

Day 2 - Circumnavigate Henry Island

Today's activity departs from the west side of San Juan Island, we will kayak north toward Henry Island in search of wildlife. We follow the outer coastline which is orca whale territory. Along the way we will see a huge bald eagles nest, harbor seals lounging on the rocks and cormorants nesting in the cliffs. This afternoon we will take a break for lunch on Posey Island or one of the other remote pocket beaches. We paddle back through Mosquito Pass; a sheltered waterway for kayakers, and then on into Mitchell Bay. If time allows we can head into Westcott Bay and take a look at the Westcott Bay Shellfish farm from the water.

Day 3 - Kayak West Side of San Juan Island or Whale Watch Cruise

Choose your own adventure today! We will either shuttle you to the beautiful western side of San Juan Island for a day of sea kayaking or you may choose to go on a whale watch wildlife cruise aboard the Odyssey. The day of kayaking includes a kayak safety lesson before you begin paddling, making sure everyone in comfortable and ready for your adventure. As we journey down the coast, we'll keep a lookout for marine mammals surfacing above the water as we are in orca whale territory. Today's route has a few different beach options for lunch, allowing us to accommodate everyone in the group. About halfway through the trip, we stop for lunch along a beach where you can search for creatures in the tide pools, look for sea glass among the pebbles or simply soak in the scenery. After lunch we will head back out on the water in search of orcas and eagles.

If you choose the whale watch boat, you will spend the afternoon cruising the San Juan Islands aboard a comfortable classic motor yacht. You can sit back and relax in comfort while the personable on-board naturalists share their depth of knowledge of the local whales and wildlife. This is a great option for everyone, endless sights to see and the naturalist love entertaining you with their stories.

Day 4 - Kayak the north shore of Orcas Island

This morning we will launch from North Beach and paddle along the northern shoreline of Orcas. If the weather is right, we can paddle north to Sucia Island; a marine state park known for its emerald waters and sandstone formations. If you're seeking a shorter day on the water, we will kayak to Point Doughty, a 57 acre preserve.  Along the way, you might see bald eagles perched in old douglas fir trees or a great blue heron wading in a shallow bay searching for its lunch.  Afterwards, we will explore other parts of beautiful Orcas Island being returning to your comfortable room at one of Orcas Island's top inns.

Day 5 - Kayak and Explore Orcas Island

Spend today exploring the small village of Eastsound, hike the trails of Moran State Park to discover waterfalls, and kayak and swim in Cascade Lake

Day 6 - Kayak Lopez Island coastline

For the last day of your kayak adventure, we will take the ferry to scenic Lopez Island and explore its calm shorelines. Keep an eye out for an array of marine mammals and plentiful water fowl such as the tufted puffin at Iceberg Point.  You can enjoy expansive views of the Olympic Penninsula and Cattle Point as we paddle past a large bald eagle's nest.  You may even get lucky, like one of our previous tours, and experience a rare octopus sighting near MacKay Harbor.
