Why Go with Crystal Seas?

EXPERIENCE THE ISLANDS LIKE A LOCAL

Step into the shoes—or the boat—of a local. Your guides, all based in the San Juans, thrive on sharing favorite off-the-map places. Paddle pristine shorelines. Explore isolated pocket beaches. Learn about tides and currents. Savor locally sourced foods. Camp beneath the stars. At trip’s end, take home once-in-a-lifetime memories and a local’s love for the islands.

SPECTACULAR CAMPSITES

The San Juan Island’s are known for spectacular saltwater, island, and distant mountain views. On your kayak adventure, remote campsites in Washington State Parks offer the best of these. Linger over coffee or a glass of wine. Sit beside a seaside campfire. Stroll the beach for new viewpoints. It’s postcard-perfect, so have your camera ready.

GOURMET MEALS

Using locally sourced, organic ingredients, meals are handcrafted with your dietary preferences and requirements guiding the way. Kayak adventures are active, and we know you need quality, hearty, delicious food to fuel your experience. In addition to fully, happy bellies, we’ve got your thirst quenched too. Juice, beer, wine, and, elixir of life, coffee, are all included.

PROFESSIONAL GUIDES

A guide can make all the difference between a “good” trip and an unforgettably fabulous one. Our guides are top of class. Each one is selected for their unsurpassed knowledge and skill, positive leadership, friendliness and fun attitude, and for love for their work. Paddle into your adventure confidently; you’re in the best of hands.

SMALL PERSONAL GROUPS

We keep it small—just 8 guests with 2 guides. Not only are small groups safer, but they invite natural camaraderie. They also offer more flexibility. Are you a birder? An avid photographer? Looking to push your kayaking limits? With small groups, we can adjust the plan for your interests. For all these reasons and more we keep our regularly scheduled multi-day expedition group size to 8 guests or less (unless a private trip). Private and custom tours are available upon request.

Previous sea kayaking experience is not required to enjoy our tours.

NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Before paddling toward the horizon, you’ll begin your sea kayak tour with a safety and kayak lesson. Your guide will familiarize you with your equipment and sea kayak safety gear. You’ll also learn paddling technique, how to load and unload your sea kayak, and other skills that will prepare you to for your kayak expedition.

TIMES & DISTANCES

On most days of your kayak tour in the San Juan Islands, you’ll paddle 8 to 10 miles. Expect to spend about 4 to 5 hours on the water. Along the way, you’ll make stops at public-landing beaches for meals and snacks, to stretch your legs or take a rest, and soak in the views.

Sample Trip Itinerary

(subject to change due to factors such as lodging availability, restaurant availability and ferry schedules)

Day 1 - Kayak along the West side of San Juan Island to Stuart Island with a lunch stop on Posey Island

Today we will paddle along the west side of San Juan Island heading north. Tide and wind conditions we will determine our route either around the west side of Henry Island or through Mosquito Pass to Posey Island, where we will break for lunch. After lunch we cross Spieden Channel, taking a short break to admiring the exotic mammals that call Speiden Island home.  Finally heading over to Stuart Island, our home for the night.  Arriving at our campsite late in the afternoon we will spend some time setting up camp and relaxing while getting to know your fellow kayakers.

Day 2 - Circumnavigate Stuart Island

Today we may circumnavigate Stuart Island in search of orcas and eagles or take a picnic up to the Historic Lighthouse at the far Northwest point of the island. Either way, the day will be spent enjoying the beauty of the island and embracing some of the local color. Return to our camp in the evening, where your guides will prepare a delicious dinner for all to enjoy.

Day 3 - Kayak From Stuart To Jones Island

Go for an early morning walk in the woods of Stuart Island on one of the many trails, before packing up camp and kayaking to Jones Island. Jones is well known in the boating and kayaking community for its quiet harbors and friendly deer. Tonight, pick your favorite vista to watch the sun as it melts below the horizon.

Day 4 - Kayak from Jones Island to Shaw Island & back to Friday Harbor

Today we cross San Juan Channel to Shaw Island and then continuing across to the shores of San Juan Island. We will stop for lunch on Turn Island before ending the kayak expedition on San Juan Island, returning to Friday Harbor by mid-afternoon.
